Deciding when a painting is finished can be a tough thing to do. That has been my case with this one. I ended up just working with acrylics, and even though it´s similar to oil paintings, my work comes out differently with this technique. I think the result is more similar to how I use pastels (you can check my pastel Portraits in my blog) than with the oils. I felt as if I stayed half way through both techniques and I had to decide wether to leave the free style brushstrokes or smooth them to make them more homogeneous. This´s what came out, although you´ll have to forgive me for the picture since it has been quite difficult to make a “decent” picture with such dimensions (78″x 63,2″) moving in a reduced space. I think it gains in real life and it´s not as dark as in the picture.
This musician belongs to the Majareta Company which is a fun Brass Band from Sevilla. They played some months ago in Madrid in San Isidro´s feast were I made some fast sketches from them and two other brass bands on live.
Decidir cuando un cuadro está terminado puede ser una ardua tarea y éste ha sido el caso con esta obra. Al final pinté sólo con acrílico, y aunque se parezca al óleo, mi obra resulta diferente con esta técnica. Creo que se asemeja más al acabado que hago con el pastel (puedes echar un vistazo al apartado Retratos de mi blog) que con el óleo. Me dio la sensación de estar a medio camino entre una técnica y otra, teniendo
que decidir si dejar los brochazos de color más libres y sueltos o suavizarlos y dejarlos más homogéneos. El resultado es el que se puede ver aquí arriba, aunque he de pedir disculpas por la calidad de la foto ya que me ha resultado muy complicado sacar una foto “decente” con estas dimensiones (200 x 162 cm) en un espacio reducido. Creo que gana en vivo y además no es tan oscura como sale en la foto.
Este músico toca con una divertida Brass Band llamada Compañía Majareta de Sevilla. Tocaron hace unos meses en las fiestas de San Isidro en Madrid donde estuve tomando apuntes en vivo de esta banda y otras dos Brass Bands más.
