This weekend I participated in TAZ ( Temporary Art Zone) in Madrid. Organized by Atelier Solar, an abandoned, centric terrace was lend to several artists to intervene it. It was lots of fun to decide how to use the place for our art and this was my intervention. The dirty tent resulted to be my canvas and I brought up the drawing by cleaning it.

This place will be destroyed quite soon so that was the idea in which I worked with. During my trip in Brazil I lived with this lovely nine year old girl whose life was just starting but it was developing in a delicate environment where her dreams can turn around easily if she´s not smart or lucky enough. She´s the symbol for this work in this beautiful but ephemeral terrace.

Este fin de semana participé en TAZ ( Temporary Art Zone) en Madrid. Organizado por Atelier Solar, esta céntrica y abandonada terraza fue cedida un par de días para que varios artistas pudiéramos intervenirla. Fue muy divertido decidir cómo utilizar ese espacio para nuestra obra y estas fotos reflejan mi intervención. La sucia carpa resultó ser mi lienzo y la estuve limpiando para sacar a relucir el dibujo.

Este lugar se destruirá pronto y ese fue el hilo conductor de mi obra. Durante mi viaje a Brasil conviví con esta linda niña de nueve años que tenía toda la vida por delante pero en un entorno un tanto delicado donde sus sueños pueden ser truncados si no es lista ni tiene suerte. Ella es el símbolo de este trabajo en esta bella pero efímera terraza.

IN-VISIBLES

My solo exhibition (with Nadia Brito´s solo too) had a great and numerous audience! Very pleased with the results. After six intense months working between my paintings and the theater I can finally say it was worth it. For those who are in Gran Canaria (Spain) the exhibition will be opened until next thursday 26th of May (Sala de Artes de Agüimes). Meanwhile, in Madrid, I participate in a collective exhibition too with my atelier mates in “Espacio Trapezio”. This last one will be opened till 16th of june. Still time for those who can go!

Mi exposición individual (junto con la individual de Nadia Brito) tuvo gran y numerosa acogida. Muy contenta con los resultados. Tras seis meses de intenso trabajo entre la pintura y el teatro por fin puedo decir que valió la pena. Para aquellos que estén en Gran Canaria (España) les recuerdo que la exposición estará abierta hasta el 26 de mayo en la Sala de Arte de Agüimes. Mientras tanto, en Madrid, también participo en la colectiva con mis compañeros de taller en “Espacio Trapezio”. Esta última se podrá ver hasta el 16 de junio. Todavía están a tiempo los que se quieran y puedan pasar!

Oil portraits in black and white. Retratos al óleo en blanco y negro. Theater people. Gente del teatro.

As I´m almost ready with the works I´m going to exhibit soon (6th of May in Gran Canaria!), here is a detail of my last painting. My project goes around the least known face of the theater, its corners and technicians. I specially focus on their women who keep on growing in number in this area since some time ago they weren´t able to do so in many sections (at least in Spain).

Ya casi he terminado con los trabajos que estoy preparando para la exposición que está al caer (¡6 de mayo en Gran Canaria!). Este es un detalle de mi última pintura. Mi proyecto trata sobre el lado menos conocido del teatro , sus rincones y trabajadores técnicos. Especialmente me centro en sus mujeres ya que hasta hace no mucho éstas tenían vetado mucho de los trabajos donde hoy en día se van sumando en número.

A new painting of Ana. As well as in the last one, I ´m just showing part of it since it´s part of the exhibition I´m preparing for May. The painting is an oil on canvas 59″x 59″.

Una nueva pintura de Ana. Al igual que en la anterior, solo muestro un detalle ya que pertenece a la serie que voy a exponer en mayo. Esta pintura es un óleo sobre lienzo de 150 x 150 cm.

I´m working on my next exhibition which will take place in Gran Canaria by May, so till then I ´ll be just showing details of the paintings that will be shown there. If you want to see the complete work you´ll have to wait till then. ; ) This is a fragment of an oil on canvas of 60″ x 60″.

Estoy trabajando en mi próxima exposición que tendrá lugar en mayo en Gran Canaria. Para abrirles el apetito, a partir de ahora solo mostraré detalles de las pinturas que estoy realizando. Si quieren ver más tendrán que esperar hasta entonces. ; ) Esto que adelanto es un fragmento de un óleo sobre lienzo de 150 x 150 cm.

The second version of Antonio in color. This one was started with ochres and red palette, but while I saw what was coming out, I decided to complement it with some greens and here is the result. I almost lost the patient with this one during the process and the good thing is that the brushstrokes got even looser while I went mad. It finally ended with an unusual more visceral and braver work I think.

La segunda versión de Antonio en color. Esta obra la comencé con una paleta en ocres y rojos, pero mientras iba viendo el resultado decidí incorporar verdes y este fue el resultado. Casi pierdo la paciencia durante el proceso pero lo bueno es que los brochazos fueron soltándose cuanto más me enojaba. Finalmente la obra resultó ser más visceral y valiente a mi parecer.

Here I come again with a black and white portrait. This time I didn´t add any other color, although my blacks were made with carmine red and emerald green. Surprisingly, it´s being quite a pleasure to paint with such a limited palette! By now, I keep on working with the portraits in the search of the mystery. I know it´s going to be a long way to go but I have to be patient and keep it up.

Aqui vuelvo con otro retrato en blanco y negro. Esta vez me contuve y no añadí más color aunque sí he de decir que el negro lo trabajé (y siempre lo suelo hacer) a través del rojo carmín y el verde esmeralda. Sorprendentemente ¡está siendo un placer trabajar con esta paleta! De todas formas sigo trabajando a través de los retratos en la búsqueda del misterio. Sé que será un largo camino pero tengo que ser paciente y no perder la motivación.

After my first black and white painting experience, I did the same portrait in another palette. This time using emerald green, carmine red, english red, ocre and white. The drawing got to be a bit different from the other one, but as I said, what I wanted to focus on was the painting process and its result. Its not easy to put limits to yourself, and even harder to abide them, but what you obtain can be very interesting. It has a different tonality from other paintings I´ve done but I felt quite comfortable with it.

Tras mi primera experiencia en blancos y negros, realicé el mismo retrato en color utilizando esta paleta: verde esmeralda, rojo carmín, rojo inglés, ocre y blanco. El dibujo difiere un poco del anterior, pero como ya comenté, me quería enfocar en el proceso pictórico y su resultado. No es fácil ponerse limites y menos aún cumplirlos pero el resultado puede ser muy interesante. Tiene unas tonalidades diferentes a las que suelo trabajar pero me sentí bastante comfortable con el.

Portraits. Retratos.

As I said in my last post, I´m trying new painting experiences in order to look for some mystery through the color and brushstrokes. I gave more emphasis to the painting process than to the similarity with the model. In this case I limited my palette into blacks and whites but I couldn´t resist to add a touch of ocher.  I used titanium white, carmine red, emerald green and a touch of ocher. Since I love color, I thought it would be hard to work in this tones, but it got to be much faster and more gratifying. The color didn´t disturb to obtain my objective and I think the result  got to be even more powerful than in color.

Como ya comenté en mi última entrada, estoy experimentando con nuevas experiencias pictóricas para conseguir mayor misterio a través del color y la pincelada. Le di más importancia al proceso pictórico que a la similitud con el modelo. En este caso limité mi paleta a tonos grises aunque no pude resistirme a dar unos toques de ocre. Utilicé blanco titanio, rojo carmín, verde esmeralda, y un toque de ocre. Como me encanta el color pensé que me resultaría difícil trabajar en estos tonos pero resultó ser un mucho más rápido y gratificante. El color no me distraía del objetivo y creo que prescindir de él le otorgó un resultado más potente a la obra.
